North to Lake Como, where the pace of the whole route changes — villa gardens, funiculars up into the hills, and lake-view towns reachable by ferry rather than car. The longest stay of the trip, and meant to be spent doing very little.

South again to a compact, walkable city built around its Roman arena and its own Romeo-and-Juliet mythology — a short, easy stop between the lake and Venice, not a destination the route lingers on.

The route closes in Venice, given the same generous stay as the lake — canals, vaporetti, and a city meant to be gotten lost in rather than seen on a schedule, as the true finale of an Italian lakes-and-cities trip.
