Analytics (PostHog)

This site uses PostHog, a privacy-focused analytics tool, to understand aggregate usage — for example, which regions or features are popular — without building individual visitor profiles. PostHog is configured cookie-free: distinct-ID persistence is set to "memory", meaning it exists only as a JavaScript variable for the current tab and is never written to a cookie or to browser storage. It does not survive a page reload or a new tab. No cookie-consent banner is required, and the “no account needed” promise on the homepage stays accurate. Do Not Track is honored, and session recording is switched off. One server-side event on our search endpoint records only an aggregate hit/miss count, never the search text itself. Recovery IDs (see “Favorites, trips, and Recovery ID” above) are stripped out of any page URL PostHog receives before it's sent, so a Recovery ID never ends up in analytics.

Legal basis: legitimate interest in understanding and improving the service (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). We rely on this basis rather than consent because no cookies are set and the analytics are anonymous and aggregate.

IP addresses: PostHog is configured with ip: false, so no IP address is stored with any event or used to derive location. An IP address is still necessarily processed transiently at the network level — first by our own server, which forwards analytics requests to PostHog through a first-party proxy, then briefly by PostHog's EU servers while receiving the request — but it is discarded rather than stored.

Retention: PostHog Cloud (EU) retains raw event data for up to 1 year on the free plan this project currently uses (up to 7 years on a paid plan); after that it is deleted or moved to cold storage per PostHog's standard policy. Session recording is disabled entirely, so no replay data is collected or retained.

Favorites, trips, and Recovery ID

Favorites, collections, and any planned or saved trip are stored only in your browser's local storage by default. Nothing is sent to our server, and there is still no account — this data stays on your device until you clear it (e.g. via your browser's site data settings) or explicitly choose to back it up as described below.

If you choose “Get Recovery ID” on the My eURo TRIP page, a copy of your saved places, collections, and trips at that moment is stored on our server, linked only to a randomly generated Recovery ID — never to your name, email, or any account, since none of those exist for this app. That ID is a bearer credential: anyone who has it can view and replace that stored copy, and there is no password reset or account recovery if it's lost, so treat it like a password. “Update Recovery ID” replaces the stored copy with what's currently saved in your browser at that time — it is not automatic; nothing is re-uploaded until you choose to update it again. You can delete the stored copy at any time using your Recovery ID. If you never create a Recovery ID, none of your Saved data ever leaves your browser.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR — this is data you explicitly ask us to store, solely so you can retrieve it yourself later (e.g. on another device), and we don't use it for anything else.

Content from third parties

Map tiles (OpenStreetMap/CARTO) and place images (Wikimedia) are loaded directly by your browser from those providers, which necessarily transmits your IP address to them. This is based on our legitimate interest in reliably displaying maps and images (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR); their own privacy policies apply to that processing.

Your rights

Subject to applicable law, you have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data, to object to its processing, and to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. Since we do not operate accounts and do not store personal data on our servers, most of these rights concern data processed by PostHog on our behalf — contact us at the email address above with any request.
